Word search maker for kids

Easy grids, big letters, across and down only

Make an easy word search for a beginning reader. Type your own words or pick a ready set. The grid is small, the letters are big, and words only go across and down unless you choose otherwise. An answer key is added.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type your words or pick a ready word set. Two-letter words such as “is” and “it” are fine.
  2. Choose the grid size. A 6 by 6 grid with five words suits a kindergartener.
  3. Choose word clues or picture clues, and small or capital letters.
  4. Print. Press “New version” for a new puzzle with the same words.

Easy on purpose

In the easy setting words read from left to right or from top to bottom, the way a child reads. No word is hidden backwards.

Checked before you see it

Each puzzle is checked so that every word appears exactly once, and the filler letters do not spell anything they should not.

Good questions

How do I make a word search for kids?

Type the words above, choose the grid size and press Print. It is free and there is no sign-up.

Does it come with an answer key?

Yes. Keep “Answer key page” on and the last page shows where every word is.

Can the word search use lowercase letters?

Yes. Small letters are the first choice here, because that is what a beginner reads. You can switch to capitals.

Can I use pictures as clues?

Yes. Choose “Pictures”. Words that have a picture in our library show it; the others are shown as words.

How many words fit?

Five words in a 6 by 6 grid, eight in an 8 by 8 grid and ten in a 10 by 10 grid. A longer list makes more puzzles.
