The goal: on day 10 your child looks at every letter before saying a word, and reads words and sentences never seen before, with no picture to help.
For the child who guesses from the first letter or the picture, or “reads” a book by heart. About five minutes a day from you.
That is the goal, not a promise. Some children drop the habit in a week, and some need the ten days twice. Guessing at words is common at five, six and seven.

“cap” read as “cat.” One letter, then a guess.
Every letter, left to right. Then the word.
You say “sound it out” and your child says the first word that comes. That does not mean your child is not trying. Guessing is quick, and in a book with a picture for every line it often works. So this plan takes away what a guess feeds on, one thing at a time.
See it and hear itThis is the day 3 track your child works with. It waits, then gives the answer. Nothing listens back.
Children guess in different ways, and each one needs a different push. Day 1 is a four-minute check that points to the most likely one.
From the first letterSees one letter and says a word that starts with it.
cap → “cat”
Looks up at the picture and says what it shows.
twig → “branch”
Knows the book by heart. The same words in a new order are not read.
Not guessing at allSays the sounds, but no word comes. That is blending, and it comes first.

The ten daysEach day takes away one thing a guess feeds on: the whole word at a glance, the picture beside it, the line known by heart, the sentence that makes sense. What is left is the letters.
Everything in your packIt is more than worksheets. It is the pages, someone showing you each day, and a voice that works with your child while you step away.

Ten days of pages with the hand-drawn Sound It Out friends. A picture is only ever something to match or check after the word is read. Color and ink-saving black and white, US Letter and A4.

About a minute each. You see what to do before you do it, with the real sound of each letter. With captions.
On days 3, 4, 6 and 8. Press play and step away. The voice says what to do, waits, then says each word or sentence so your child can check it alone.

Day 1 shows which guessing habit it is. Day 10 uses only words and sentences your child has never seen, so a guess or a good memory does not pass.
It covers the word and shows one letter at a time. A guess needs the whole word at once. The card takes that away. Later it covers the pictures too.
After day 10 you type in your numbers. It shows where your child started, where they are now, and the next step.

Three steps to begin, and a code to scan for the welcome video. You are never left wondering what to do first.

One star to color for each day.

With your child’s name, and signed by you.
Scan the code in the book. No app to install, no password to remember.

Not sure yet? Do the free 3-minute check. It tells you whether this plan fits your child before you spend anything.
It is not a promise. Some children drop the habit in a week. Some need the ten days twice. It is not a test for dyslexia, and guessing at words on its own does not mean a child has it. If your child is seven or older, or finds reading very hard in other ways too, tell the teacher as well. It is not an app, and your child does not need a screen. It covers short words of two and three sounds. If your child cannot yet join sounds into a word, the blending plan comes first, and the free check tells you so. You need a printer and scissors.
Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.
Because it is quick, and in a book with a picture for every line it often works. Some children were even taught to look at the first letter, look at the picture, and guess. It is a habit, and it is common at five, six and seven. It is not a lack of effort.
Here is a quick way to see. Take three words from a book your child “reads” well, and write them on paper in a new order. If your child cannot read them there, the book is known by heart. That is a good memory. It is not yet reading. The free check does this for you, and day 8 of the plan is built for it.
Most children who need this are five to seven. Your child should already know most of the letter sounds, and be able to join three sounds into a word, even slowly.
Pictures are fine for enjoying a story. This plan only changes the order: the letters first, the picture after. You can tell the teacher what you are doing at home.
About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, and a minute at the end when your child reads three things to you. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of about four minutes each.
Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow. Slow is the whole idea: a child who guesses is going too fast. The halfway check on day 5 tells you whether to go on or go back.
No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.
The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.
Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
