The goal: on day 10 your child reads a short sentence they have never seen, smoothly, the way they would say it.
For the child who can sound out short words but reads them one at a time. About five minutes a day from you, and no timer.
That is the goal, not a promise. Some children are smooth by day 7, and some need the ten days twice. Reading word by word is how almost every new reader starts.

Each word alone. Some sounded out again. A flat voice.
A short new sentence, read the way your child would say it.
Your child can read the words. But every word is a new job, even one read a moment ago, and by the end of the sentence the start is gone. That does not mean your child is not trying. Sounding out takes all of a new reader’s attention. Smooth reading comes from easy words read again and again, in the right order.
See it and hear itThis is the day 7 track your child works with. It waits, then gives the answer. Nothing listens back.
A child can read slowly for four different reasons, and each needs a different push. Day 1 is a three-minute check, with no timer, that points to the most likely one.
Single words are still slowEach short word is sounded out loud, even on its own.
c … a … t … cat
Reads a word alone, then sounds it out again in a sentence.
Every word is right, but it sounds like a list, in a flat voice.
The. Cat. Sat.
By the end of the sentence, the start is gone.

The ten daysThe order is the whole idea: words first, then two or three words in one scoop, then whole sentences, then a story read on two days. There is no timer on any page. Smooth, not fast.
Everything in your packIt is more than worksheets. It is the pages, someone showing you each day, and a voice that works with your child while you step away.

Ten days of pages with the hand-drawn Sound It Out friends. Color and ink-saving black and white, US Letter and A4.

About a minute each. You see and hear the move before you do it: word by word, and then smooth. With captions.
On days 2, 7 and 8. Press play and step away. Your child reads, the voice waits, then reads it smoothly so your child hears how it should sound.

Day 1 shows where the reading sticks. Day 10 uses four sentences and six words your child has never seen, so you can see what changed.
Sound it out in your head, then say it once. Scoop two or three words in one breath. Read it three times, until it sounds like talking.
After day 10 you type in your numbers. It shows where your child started, where they are now, and the next step.

Three steps to begin, and a code to scan for the welcome video. You are never left wondering what to do first.

One star to color for each day.

With your child’s name, and signed by you.
Scan the code in the book. No app to install, no password to remember.

Three steps in the yellow box. Do job 1 together.
Your child carries on with the page, with the sound track on three days.
Show and starYour child reads to you. One star colored.
“With your grown-up, 2 minutes” is printed on every page. Days 1, 5 and 10 are checks, and those need you for the whole page. A young child may need you nearby on other days too. If a day is easy, do the next one. If a day is hard, do it again tomorrow.

It is not a promise. Some children are smooth by day 7. Some need the ten days twice. It is not speed reading: there is no timer, and nobody counts words a minute. It is not a test for dyslexia or anything else; if your child is seven or older and reading is still very slow and tiring, tell the teacher as well. It is not an app, and your child does not need a screen. It uses short words that can be sounded out, so a child who cannot yet blend sounds into words should start with the blending plan. You need a printer.
Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.
Yes. Almost every new reader does. Sounding out takes all of their attention, so there is none left for making it flow. It usually eases as short words become easy. This plan is the practice that helps that happen. If your child is seven or older and reading is still very slow and tiring, do the plan and tell the teacher what you see.
Smoother, which is the part that matters. We do not time children and we do not set a speed, because parents told us pressure makes it worse. When short words come all at once and words are read in groups, reading takes less effort. That is the aim. We never measure speed.
Yes, that is one of the four sticking points the day 1 check looks for. The plan goes from single words to scoops of two or three words, then to a sentence built one word at a time, then to whole sentences. Not sure? Do the free check.
Most children who need this are five to seven. Your child should already be able to sound out short words such as cat, hen and mud. If that is still hard, start with the blending plan.
About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, and a minute at the end when your child reads to you. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of about three minutes each.
Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow. Reading the same page twice is the method here, not a step back. The halfway check on day 5 tells you whether to go on or go back.
No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.
The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.
Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
