A 10-day plan · ages 5 to 7

Tell b from d

The goal: on day 10 your child tells b from d, in letters, in words never seen before, and in their own writing.

For the child who knows the letters but mixes up these two. About five minutes a day from you.

That is the goal, not a promise. Some children are sure by day 6, and some need the ten days twice. Mixing up b and d is common before seven.

From “which one is it?” to sure

Today
b?d

“dig” read as “big.” A b written backwards.

Day 10
bed

Not sure? Your child writes “bed” and checks it alone.

You have corrected it a hundred times. It still comes back. That does not mean your child is not trying. The two letters are the same shape, turned around, and a child needs a way to check it alone.

Hear a real sound track

This is the day 6 track your child works with. It waits, then gives the answer. Nothing listens back.

Step one is different

First, find where the mix-up is

A child can mix up b and d in reading, in writing, or both, and each needs a different push. Day 1 is a three-minute check that points to the most likely one.

In reading

Sees one and says the other.

dig → “big”
In writing

Knows which one it is, but the hand turns it around.

🔁In both

Reading and writing. Take one letter at a time.

👍Just slips

Right most of the time. Normal at five and six.

Your result tells you which days to do, and which to do twice. No starting at page one for no reason.

Day 10Eight new wordsWords your child has never seen, and letters written from your voice. You mark them yourself.

One letter at a time is the whole idea: only b on day 2, only d on day 3. They meet on day 4. Teaching both together from the start is what keeps them mixed up.

30days
Try all ten days. If it is not right, you get your money back.

Do the plan with your child. If it is not right for you, write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will give you your money back. You keep the pages.

Not sure yet? Do the free 3-minute check. It tells you whether this plan fits your child before you spend anything.

What this is not

It is not a promise. Some children are sure by day 6. Some need the ten days twice. It is not a test for dyslexia, and mixing up b and d on its own does not mean a child has it. If your child is seven or older and it has not settled, tell the teacher as well. It is not an app, and your child does not need a screen. It covers one thing, b and d. You need a printer.

Questions

Do I need a printer?

Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.

Is mixing up b and d normal?

Yes. Most children do it at five and six, and it has usually settled by seven. This plan is practice aimed at helping it settle. If your child is seven or older and still mixes them up often, do the plan and tell the teacher what you see.

How old should my child be?

Most children who need this are five to seven. Your child should already know most of the letter sounds. Not sure? Do the free check.

What about p and q, or other letters?

This plan is only b and d. The same way of working (one letter at a time, a helper to say out loud, a word to check with) is what you would use for p and q.

How much of my time does it take?

About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, and a minute at the end when your child shows you three things. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of about three minutes each.

What if my child cannot do a day?

Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow. Do not start d until b is steady. The halfway check on day 5 tells you whether to go on or go back.

Does anything record my child?

No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.

How do I get the videos and sound tracks?

The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.

What if it is not right for us?

Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
