A 10-day writing plan · ages 5 to 7

My First Sentences

The goal: on day 10 your child writes a sentence they have never written, with a capital, spaces and a period, and reads it back.

For the child who can write some words but not a sentence: the words run together, there is no capital or period, or the idea gets lost on the way to the paper.

That is the goal, not a promise. Some children write their first sentence in a week, and some need the ten days twice. First sentences are short and simple for a long time, and that is normal.

Where you are, and where we are going

From “thecatisonamat” to a real sentence

Today

Words run together, no capital, no period, or one word where a sentence should be.

Day 10

A new sentence with a capital, a space between words and a period, read back aloud.

Writing a sentence asks a child to do many things at once: hold an idea, spell each word, and remember the capital, the spaces and the period. While one gets attention, the others slip. This plan takes them one at a time.

Step one is different

First, find where the trouble is

Day 1 is a five-minute check: your child copies a sentence, writes one you say, and writes one about a picture. It shows which step to start on.

Writing words

Short words are still hard to write. Spelling comes first.

Capital and period

The words are there, but the sentence has no start and no end.

“my child can’t write a sentence”
␣Spaces

The words run together into one long word.

💭Own ideas

Can write what is said, but not an idea of their own.

Your result tells you which day to start on.

“With your grown-up, 2 minutes” is printed on every page. Days 1, 5 and 10 are checks, and those need you for the whole page. A young child may need you nearby on other days too. If a day is easy, do the next one. If a day is hard, do it again tomorrow.

What this is not

It is not a promise. Some children need the ten days twice. It teaches a simple sentence: no stories, no long sentences and no handwriting (Start at the Top covers handwriting). It is for a child who can already write some short words; if words are still hard, spelling comes first (Hear It, Write It). It is not a test for any learning difficulty. It is not an app. You need a printer, a pencil, crayons and scissors.

Questions

Do I need a printer?

Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.

How do I teach my kindergartener to write a sentence?

One step at a time. First your child says the whole sentence out loud and counts its words on their fingers. Then one line for each word. Then the capital at the start, a finger space between words, and the period at the end. This plan gives a day to each.

When do kids learn to write sentences?

Most children write their first short sentences in kindergarten and first grade. They stay short and simple for a long time. If your child is seven or older and a short sentence is still very hard, tell the teacher what you see.

Should I correct the spelling?

Not while your child is learning to write a sentence. If you can read it, it is a sentence. Spelling has its own plan, Hear It, Write It.

How much of my time does it take?

About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, and a minute at the end to hear the sentence read back. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of about five minutes each.

What if my child cannot do a day?

Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow. One good sentence is worth more than five hurried ones.

What comes after the ten days?

You can stop there. If you want daily practice to keep going, The One Sheet gives your child one sheet a day, made from what you tell us. It is a separate plan, $9.99 a month, and you can cancel any time.

Does anything record my child?

No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.

How do I get the videos?

The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.

What if it is not right for us?

Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
