A 10-day math plan · ages 4 to 7

Count It Up

The goal: on day 10 your child counts a group by touching each thing once, knows which number is more, and adds two small groups within 10.

For the child who says the numbers but loses track, counts one thing twice, or cannot yet put two small groups together. About five minutes a day from you.

That is the goal, not a promise. Some children get there in ten days, and some need the ten days twice. Children learn these steps at different times between four and six.

Where you are, and where we are going

From “one, two, five, nine” to counting that works

Today

Counts the same apple twice. Says a new number each time. Not sure if 6 is more than 4.

Day 10

Touches each thing once, knows which number is more, and adds two small groups within 10.

Your child can say the numbers. But ask how many, and they count one thing twice, skip one, or start again. Counting is three small rules, and nobody showed them yet: touch each thing once, one number for each, and the last number tells how many.

Step one is different

First, find where the trouble is

Struggling with math at four to six usually comes down to one of four steps. Day 1 is a four-minute check with real things on the table. It shows which step to start on.

👆Counting

Says the numbers, but counts one thing twice or skips one.

“my 5 year old can’t count to 10”
🔟Knowing the numbers

Does not yet know what 7 looks like, or which number is which.

⚖️More and less

Is not sure whether 6 is more than 4.

Putting together

Counts well, but cannot yet put two groups together.

“With your grown-up, 2 minutes” is printed on every page. Days 1, 5 and 10 are checks, and those need you for the whole page. A young child may need you nearby on other days too. If a day is easy, do the next one. If a day is hard, do it again tomorrow.

What this is not

It is not a promise. Some children need the ten days twice. It is not a test for a learning difficulty. It teaches counting, more and less, and adding within 10: no taking away and no numbers past 10. Those come next, in The One Sheet for Math. It is not an app, and your child does not need a screen. You need a printer, a pencil, crayons, scissors and about ten small things to count.

Questions

Do I need a printer?

Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.

My child can count to 20 out loud. Why do they still struggle?

Saying the numbers is not the same as counting. To count, a child touches each thing once, says one number for each, and knows that the last number tells how many. Many children say the numbers well and miss one of these three. Day 1 shows you which.

Is it normal for a 5 year old not to count to 10?

Children learn to count at different times between four and six. If your child is six or older and counting to 10 is still very hard, do the plan and tell the teacher what you see.

Why real things first?

A picture on a page cannot be moved. Real things can. When your child moves each thing aside as they count it, nothing is counted twice. The page comes after.

Does it teach taking away?

No. It stops at adding within 10. Taking away comes next, in The One Sheet for Math, which starts where this plan ends.

How much of my time does it take?

About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, with real things on the table, and a minute at the end. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of about four minutes each.

What if my child cannot do a day?

Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow, with real things first. The halfway check on day 5 tells you whether to go on or go back.

What comes after the ten days?

You can stop there. If you want daily practice to keep going, The One Sheet gives your child one sheet a day, made from what you tell us. It is a separate plan, $9.99 a month, and you can cancel any time.

Does anything record my child?

No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.

How do I get the videos?

The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.

What if it is not right for us?

Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
