A 10-day plan · ages 5 to 7

Read It, See It

The goal: on day 10 your child reads a short story they have never seen, tells you what happened, and draws it.

For the child who can read the words but cannot answer a question about them, tell them back, or remember them. About five minutes a day from you.

That is the goal, not a promise. Some children catch the habit in a week, and some need the ten days twice. Reading words without taking them in is common while reading is new.

Where you are, and where we are going

From words that pass by to words that make a picture

Today

A cat sat on a big box.

❓

Every word read right. Nothing taken in.

Day 10

A cat sat on a big box.

🐱 📦

Read it, see it. Then tell it, or draw it.

Your child reads the page, and you ask what it was about. Nothing. That does not mean your child was not trying. Working out the words takes all of a new reader’s attention, and many children do not know yet that the words are meant to make a picture in the head. That can be shown, and it can be practiced.

See it and hear it

Hear a real sound track

This is the day 3 track your child works with. It waits, then gives the answer. Nothing listens back.

Step one is different

First, find where the meaning gets lost

A child can fail to understand a page for very different reasons, and each needs a different kind of help. Day 1 is a five-minute check that points to the most likely one.

🧗The reading is still hard work

Every word takes effort, so nothing is left for the meaning. That is not an understanding problem yet.

💬Lost inside one sentence

Reads it easily, but cannot answer one question about it.

Where did the hen sit?
A sentence is fine, a story is not

Each line is understood. The story is not held together or told back.

Not even when you read it

The story is not followed when you read it aloud. Then reading practice alone is not the answer.

Your result tells you which days to do twice, or that a different plan comes first, or to talk to the teacher. No starting at page one for no reason.

Day 1You know where it gets lostA five-minute check: the reading itself, one sentence, or a whole story.
Day 5Halfway checkSix new sentences done alone. It tells you to go on, or to go back three days.
Day 10Nothing seen beforeNew sentences and a new story, told back and drawn. You mark them yourself.

One habit, practiced seven ways: read it, then see it. Each way can only be done by a child who understood the sentence, and each one shows you so on paper. Your child does not have to explain anything.

Everything in your pack

What you get to reach it

It is more than worksheets. It is the pages, someone showing you each day, and a voice that works with your child while you step away.

Ten days of pages with the hand-drawn Sound It Out friends. Every sentence is made of short words your child can sound out, so the effort can go to the meaning. Color and ink-saving black and white, US Letter and A4.

Day 1 tells apart reading that is still hard work from reading that does not sink in. Day 10 uses only sentences and a story your child has never seen, so nothing can be remembered.

Show and star

Your child shows you the page and reads to you. One star colored.

“With your grown-up, 2 minutes” is printed on every page. Days 1, 5 and 10 are checks, and those need you for the whole page. A young child may need you nearby on other days too. If a day is easy, do the next one. If a day is hard, do it again tomorrow.

What this is not

It is not a promise. Some children catch the habit in a week. Some need the ten days twice. It is not a diagnosis of anything. It covers short sentences and very short stories made of words of two and three sounds. It is not a pack of grade-level passages with test questions. If the reading itself is still slow and effortful, another plan comes first, and the free check tells you so. If your child does not follow stories even when you read them aloud, this plan alone is not the answer: talk and read aloud together every day, and tell the teacher what you see. It is not an app, and your child does not need a screen. You need a printer.

Questions

Do I need a printer?

Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.

Why can my child read but not understand?

Often because the reading still takes all the attention there is, so nothing is left for the meaning. And often because nobody has shown the child that words are meant to make a picture in the head. Both are common while reading is new. The free check helps you see which it is.

My child can’t remember what they read. Is that the same thing?

Usually, yes. What was never pictured is hard to remember. That is why this plan has your child draw it, do it, and tell it back: each one makes the sentence into something to hold on to.

How old should my child be?

Most children who need this are five to seven. Your child should already read short words like “hen” and “box” without much effort. If that is still hard, the check will tell you, and a different plan comes first.

My child gets comprehension questions wrong at school. Will this help with those?

This plan practices the step underneath those questions: taking in a sentence, and holding a short story together. It does not practice test passages. Tell the teacher what you are doing at home, and show them the day 10 page.

How much of my time does it take?

About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, and a minute at the end when your child shows you the page. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of about five minutes each.

What if my child cannot do a day?

Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow. Let your child read each sentence twice: once for the words, and once for the picture. The halfway check on day 5 tells you whether to go on or go back.

Does anything record my child?

No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.

How do I get the videos and sound tracks?

The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.

What if it is not right for us?

Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
