The goal: on day 10 your child starts every small letter in the right place, sits it on the line, and writes new words that you can read.
For the child whose letters start at the bottom, come out in all sizes, float off the line or face the wrong way. About five minutes a day from you.
That is the goal, not a promise. Some children get there in ten days, and some need the ten days twice. Hands grow into writing: wobbly letters at four and five are not a problem to fix.

Letters that start at the bottom, in all sizes, off the line.
Each letter starts at its dot and sits on the line.
You have said “neater, please” a hundred times. It does not help, because your child does not know what to change. Neat writing is not trying harder. It is a few small habits: how to sit, how to pinch the pencil, and where each letter starts.
See it and hear itThis is the day 6 track your child works with. It waits, then gives the answer. Nothing listens back.
Messy writing has more than one cause, and each one needs a different push. Day 1 is a three-minute check: your child writes a short sample and you watch the pencil. It points to the most likely one.
Everything is hard and tiring. The hand hurts, the paper slides, writing ends in tears.
Letters are made from the bottom up, or go the wrong way around.
“writes letters from bottom to top”
The letters are made the right way, but they float, or tall and small letters are the same size.
A few letters face the wrong way. If it is b and d, there is a plan just for that pair.

The ten daysLetters are taught in families that start the same way, so one move teaches many letters: a line down, a bounce, a curve back, a slant. Every letter has a green dot where the pencil starts, and a few words to say while writing it.
Everything in your packIt is more than worksheets. It is the pages, someone showing you each day, and a voice that works with your child while you step away.

Ten days of pages with the hand-drawn Sound It Out friends. Every writing row has three lines: top, dotted middle and base. Color and ink-saving black and white, US Letter and A4.

About a minute each. You see where each letter starts and hear its path in words, with the real sound of each letter. With captions.
On days 6, 7 and 8. Press play and step away. Your child reads four words, the voice waits and says each one, and then your child writes them.

Day 1 shows where the trouble is. Day 10 repeats the same writing sample and adds six words your child has never written, so you can put the pages side by side.
One page to keep on the table: all 26 small letters on the three lines, each with a green dot where the pencil starts.
After day 10 you type in your numbers. It shows where your child started, where they are now, and the next step.

Three steps to begin, and a code to scan for the welcome video. You are never left wondering what to do first.

One star to color for each day.

With your child’s name, and signed by you.

Three steps in the yellow box. Do job 1 together.
Your child traces, writes and circles their own best letter. A sound track helps on three days.

“With your grown-up, 2 minutes” is printed on every page. Days 1, 5 and 10 are checks, and those need you for the whole page. A young child may need you nearby on other days too. If a day is easy, do the next one. If a day is hard, do it again tomorrow.

It is not a promise. Some children need the ten days twice. It is not a diagnosis: if writing hurts, if the hand is worn out after a few minutes, or if nothing changes after a second round of daily practice, tell the teacher what you saw. It teaches the 26 small letters in print: no capitals and no cursive. It is not for a four-year-old whose letters are big and wobbly: that is what four looks like. It is not an app, and your child does not need a screen. You need a printer and a pencil.
Yes. The pages are made to be printed once, on plain paper. The black-and-white copy uses very little ink.
Because nobody watched the pencil. A letter made from the bottom up can look right on the paper, so it gets a check mark, and the habit stays. It becomes a problem later, when writing has to be quick. What helps is to show where each letter starts and to practice it with someone watching the pencil, not the paper.
Hands grow into writing. At four, big wobbly letters of every size are what writing looks like. At five, most children are still learning how each letter is made. At six, most letters are made the right way, but sizes, lines and a backwards letter now and then still slip. If your child is seven or older and writing is still very hard, do the plan and tell the teacher what you see.
For most letters, yes: a letter that starts in the right place and goes the right way does not come out backwards. If it is only b and d, our plan Tell b from d covers that pair in depth, and it has its own free check.
No. It teaches the 26 small letters in print, because those are most of what a child writes. The capital that starts each sentence on day 9 is printed for your child.
Yes. The letters start in the same places. The book tells you the two things that change: pinch a little higher up the pencil, and lean the paper the other way.
About two minutes at the start of each day’s page, and a minute at the end when your child writes three things while you watch. Day 1 and day 10 are checks of three to four minutes each.
Stop, and do the same page again tomorrow. Five careful letters are worth more than fifty tired ones. The halfway check on day 5 tells you whether to go on or go back.
No. Nothing in this pack watches, listens to or records your child. You are the one who listens.
The “start here” page of the book has a code to scan with your phone, and a short link. They open in your browser. There is nothing to install.
Write to hello@sounditoutreading.com within 30 days of buying and we will refund you. You do not need to give a reason, and you keep the pages.
