How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set: one short vowel, a word family such as -at, or type your own words.
  2. Choose the activity: read and match to pictures, find the missing letter, build the word, trace the word, or a plain word list to read.
  3. Choose how many pages you want. Each page uses different words until the set runs out.
  4. Print. Press “New version” to get the same kind of page with other words.

What is a CVC word?

CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant: three sounds, with a short vowel in the middle, as in c-a-t. They are the first words most children sound out, because every letter says its usual sound.

Every word here can be sounded out

The built-in words were checked by hand. Words that look simple but do not sound the way they are spelled, such as was, put and son, are left out. Pictures are only used for words a child can name from the picture.

Nonsense words

Made-up words such as zat and mib show whether a child is really blending sounds and not remembering whole words. Use a few at a time, and tell your child they are silly words.

Good questions

How do I make a CVC worksheet?

Pick a word set above, choose an activity and press Print. The page is made in your browser. It is free and there is no account.

Can I use my own CVC words?

Yes. Choose “My own words” and type them. Words that have a picture in our library get one; the others are shown as words.

Is there a list of CVC words by vowel?

Yes. Choose a short vowel and the activity “Word list to read”. You get a page of words with a dot under each sound.

Does it make nonsense words?

Yes. Choose one of the nonsense word sets. They are for blending practice and have no pictures.

Why do some words have no picture?

A picture is only used when a child would call it by that word. A word such as “bag” is left as a word, because many children would say “sack” or “purse”.
