How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a group of sounds, or type the letters you want.
  2. Choose “Circle the pictures” or “Cut and sort”.
  3. Keep the answer key on if you want the picture names on a last page.
  4. Print. Press “New version” for other pictures.

Say the sound, not the letter name

The sound for s is a long hiss, not “ess”. Keep each sound short and clean, with no extra “uh” on the end.

One clear answer in every row

A wrong picture is never one that a child could fairly name with the right sound. A cap is not used as a wrong answer for h, because it could be called a hat.

Good questions

How does the circle page work?

Each row shows one letter and four pictures. Two start with the sound of the letter and two do not. Your child says the sound and circles the two that match.

Which sounds can I choose?

Every letter that has at least two pictures in our library, and the pairs sh, ch and qu. For x, the page asks for pictures that end with the sound.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Keep “Answer key page” on. It names the right pictures.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” and every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Does this sound like your child?

“Cannot tell me the first sound of a word, or cannot rhyme”
