How to make your worksheet
- Open the CVC word generator and pick the two letter word list.
- Choose how your child practices, by reading, tracing or writing each word.
- Print the page, then press New version later for a fresh set of words.
- Read each word aloud together, then let your child try it alone.
Using this sheet with your child
Sit next to your child and read the first word, at, out loud. Do this before they trace or write it. Point to each letter as you say its sound, then blend the two sounds together. Moving through the list slowly, word by word, gives your child time to hear each one clearly.
Changing the challenge
If tracing feels too easy, cover the word. Ask your child to write it from the sound alone. If writing feels hard right now, start with matching or circling instead. You can also slow down and sound out each letter separately. Then blend the two sounds together into one word.
Moving on to three letter words
Once these short words feel familiar, go back to the maker. Pick a short vowel, like a or i. This builds three letter CVC words such as cat or pig. Keeping one or two of the easier two letter words on the new page can help. Your child may feel steady while they take on longer words.
Good questions
What are CVC words?
CVC words are short words with a consonant, a vowel, and then a consonant. Cat, pen and dog are examples. Two letter words such as at, in and up use the same short vowel sound. They just leave out the first consonant.
Are CVC words sight words?
CVC words are not always sight words. Some, like at or on, get taught early as sight words. But most CVC words are meant to be sounded out letter by letter. They are not usually memorized as whole words.
How to teach blending CVC words?
To teach blending CVC words, say each sound separately first, then slide the sounds together into one word. With two letter words like at or up, there are only two sounds to blend. This makes them a good starting point.
