How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose the families of one short vowel, or all 23 families.
  2. Turn “More words of the family” on or off.
  3. Print in color or in black and white.
  4. Read the ending first, then the whole word.

The reading skill

Words that end the same way are read the same way. When a child knows -at, the words cat, hat and mat are one small step each.

Checked short words

Every word on the chart is a short word where each letter says its usual sound.

One vowel at a time

A chart for one vowel has five big rows. It is a good page to keep beside a word family flip book.
