Phonics sound chart maker

Blends, digraphs and vowel teams on one page

Print a sound chart for a folder, a desk or the wall. Choose digraphs such as sh and ch, blends such as st and fr, vowel teams, or all of them. Each box shows the letters, a key word with the letters underlined, and a picture where we have one.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose what goes on the chart: digraphs, blends, both, vowel teams or every pattern.
  2. Choose a design and a color.
  3. Print. Black and white gives a chart your child can color in.
  4. Point to a box, say the sound, then read the key word.

The reading skill

A digraph is two letters that make one sound, like sh. A blend is two letters whose sounds are both heard, like st. A chart keeps them in view while a child reads and writes.

Key words from checked lists

Each key word comes from our checked word lists, so the pattern says its usual sound in it.

How to use it

Start with the few patterns your child has been taught. Cover the others with a sheet of paper.

Good questions

Which patterns are on it?

Digraphs: sh ch th wh ng ck. Endings: ll ss ff zz tch nk. Blends: 21 from bl to tw. Quiet e and vowel teams: a_e i_e o_e u_e ee ea ai ay oa ow igh oo.

Why do some boxes have no picture?

A picture is shown only when we have one of our own for that exact word.

How do I make it last?

Print on thick paper, or laminate the page. A page protector works too.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?
