Short vowels and long vowels with pictures
Print a vowel chart. The five short vowels each get a big letter and a hand-drawn picture for the sound. Add the long vowels with quiet e, and the vowel teams such as ee and ai, when your child is ready for them.

Vowels are the hardest sounds to tell apart. A picture for each one gives a child a hook: a as in apple, e as in egg.
Teach the five short sounds first. Add quiet e and the vowel teams one at a time.
A word that starts with the sound makes the sound easy to hear. A short word such as cat can be sounded out, so it is printed under its picture with the vowel underlined.
