Phonics poster maker

One sound pattern, a key picture and a word list

Make a phonics poster for one sound pattern, such as sh, ck, quiet e or ee. The poster shows the letters in big print, a short rule for the grown-up to read out, a key word with its picture, and a list of words that have the pattern, with the pattern underlined.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a sound pattern, or choose “Type your own pattern and words”.
  2. Choose how many words go in the list.
  3. Keep the pictures on, or turn them off for a plain chart.
  4. Print and put it on the wall, or in a folder as a reference page.

The reading skill

A poster keeps one letter pattern and its sound in front of a child for the week it is being taught. The word list is reading practice with that one pattern.

Words a beginner can read

The words come from our checked word sets, so a child who has been taught the pattern can sound them out.

The rule line

The short rule is marked “grown-up reads”, because its words are not ones a beginner can read yet.

Good questions

Which patterns are included?

The short vowels a, e, i, o and u, then sh, ch, th, wh, ng, ck, ll, ss, ff, zz, tch, nk, the quiet e patterns, and the vowel teams ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, ow, igh and oo.

Can I make a poster for a pattern that is not on the list?

Yes. Choose “Type your own pattern and words”, then type the letters, your words and, if you like, a short rule.

Why do some words have no picture?

We only use our own hand-drawn pictures, and there is not one for every word yet.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
