Flaps to cut, glue and lift

Make flap strips for a phonics notebook. Each strip has three or four flaps with a picture or a word. Your child cuts between the flaps, glues the top of the strip into an exercise book, lifts each flap, and writes or draws the answer on the page underneath.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose what is on the flaps: a picture to spell, a picture for its first letter, or a word to read and draw.
  2. Pick a word set, or choose “Type your own words”.
  3. Print. Cut out each strip, then cut up the dashed lines as far as the top band.
  4. Glue the top band into the notebook. Lift each flap and write under it.

The reading skill

With a picture on the flap, the child says the word and writes its sounds, which is spelling. With a word on the flap, the child sounds it out and draws it, which shows the word was understood.

Sized for an exercise book

A strip is under seven inches wide, so it fits a composition notebook with room to spare.

One clear answer

Picture flaps only use pictures a child would name with that word, and never two pictures on a page that look alike.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Why are some of my words left out?

A picture flap needs a picture a child can name with that word. Open “Words that have a picture” to see what we have. Word flaps take any word.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, for picture flaps. Turn on “Answer key page”.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
