Story map maker

Who, where, first, next, last

Make a graphic organizer to fill in after reading a story. Choose a story map with who, where, first, next and last. Or choose beginning, middle and end, a problem and fix page, or a bubble map about one word. Each box has room to draw, lines to write, or both.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose the organizer.
  2. Choose what goes in each box: room to draw, lines to write, or both.
  3. Keep the line for the name of the story, or turn it off.
  4. Print. Read a story together first, then fill in the boxes.

The reading skill

Reading is more than saying the words. Telling who was in the story, where it happened and what came first, next and last shows that the story was understood, and it is the start of retelling.

Draw first

A beginner can draw in every box and tell you about the drawings. Writing can come later, one word or one sentence in a box.

Any book works

Use it with a library book, a story from our decodable story maker, or a story you tell out loud.

Good questions

Which organizer should I start with?

First, next, last is the simplest. The story map adds who and where.

What is the bubble map for?

For telling about one thing: a character, an animal, or a new word. Type the word for the middle, or leave it empty to write in.

Can I print it without writing lines?

Yes. Choose “Room to draw”.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
