Word family flip book maker

The ending stays, the first letter flips

Make a flip book for a word family. The big card holds the ending, such as at. The small cards hold the first letters. Staple the small cards on top of each other, flip them one at a time, and read a new word each time: cat, hat, mat, sat.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word family, or choose “Type your own words” and type words that end the same way.
  2. Print on thick paper if you can.
  3. Cut out the big card and the letter cards.
  4. Stack the letter cards on the dashed box and staple them on the left side. Flip and read.

The reading skill

A flip book is practice in blending a first sound with an ending. Only one thing changes on each flip, so a child soon sees that cat, hat and mat share the same last two sounds and only the first sound is new.

One family at a time

Stay with one ending until it is easy, then make a book for the next one. Words you type are grouped by their ending, with one book for each ending.

Words a beginner can read

The ready families are short words from our checked word sets, where every letter says its usual sound.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

How do the words I type become a book?

The maker takes the part of each word from the first vowel to the end as the ending. Words with the same ending go in one book. A word with no partner is left out, and the page says so.

How many words fit in one book?

Up to twelve first-letter cards on a page.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
