Who, did what, where: three cards make a sentence

Make silly sentence cards. There are three kinds of card, each with its own color and label: who, did what, and where. Take one of each, put them in a row, and read the sentence: “The cat dug in a tub.” Any three cards work together.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick the reading level, or choose “Type your own words” and fill in the three boxes.
  2. Choose how many cards of each kind.
  3. Print and cut the cards apart. Make three piles.
  4. Take one card from each pile, read the sentence, then write it on the writing page.

The reading skill

A child reads a whole sentence made of words that can be sounded out, and sees that a sentence has parts in an order: who, what they did, and where. The capital letter is on the who card and the end mark is on the where card.

Words a beginner can read

In the ready sets every word is a checked word of that level, or one of a few common words such as the, a, in and on. The first level uses three-letter words only.

Silly on purpose

The cards are shuffled, so a hen may have a nap in the van. A funny sentence gets read twice.

Good questions

Can I type my own cards?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” and type one card on each line, in the three boxes. The who cards get a capital letter and the where cards get an end mark.

Why do some who cards have a picture?

A card gets a small picture when our library has one for its last word, such as cat or frog.

Is there a page to write on?

Yes. Keep “A page to write the sentences on” checked.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
