A page of words for one sound pattern

Make a word list page for one sound pattern. The pattern is printed big at the top with its key picture, and the letters of the pattern are marked in every word. Choose oo, ar, or, er, ir, ur, ou, ow, oi, oy, aw, kn, wr, ph, soft c, soft g and more, one of our checked word sets, or type your own list.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose a sound pattern, one of our checked word sets, or type your own words.
  2. Choose how many words: 8, 12, 16 or 18.
  3. Add lines to write three of the words.
  4. Print. Read the list together, then let your child read it alone and color a star.

The reading skill

Reading a list of words that share one pattern teaches the eye to see those letters as one piece. After a page of ar words, a child spots ar inside a new word.

Lists written for beginners

The pattern lists use common words. Besides the pattern, most of their letters say their usual sounds. A few lists, such as ph words, need longer words; read those together first.

Mark your own pattern

With your own words, type the letters to mark, such as ee, and they are underlined in every word.
