Color words worksheet maker

Read, match, trace and color the color words

Make color word worksheets with our crayon pictures. Your child reads red, blue, green and the other color words, then draws a line to the right color, traces and writes the word, colors a picture in that color, or cuts out the words and sticks each one under its color.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose the kind of page: match, trace, read and color, or cut and stick.
  2. Choose how many words on a page and how many pages.
  3. Print in color for matching. Read and color works in black and white too.
  4. Read the color words together first.

The reading skill

Color words are some of the first words children read on their own, in books and on crayons. Matching each word to its color ties the print to something they already know.

Words a grown-up reads first

Many of these words, such as purple or triangle, cannot be sounded out by a beginner yet. Read the words together first. The picture then helps your child remember each word.

Pictures a child can name

On the matching and cut and stick pages a picture is the question, so only pictures a young child would name with that word are used. The other words are on the trace page and the read and color page, where the word is printed beside the picture.

Good questions

Which color words are there?

Red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, brown, black, white, gray and pink.

Why does matching need color print?

In black and white every color picture is a line drawing, so there would be nothing to match. The page then turns into read and color.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
