Word fishing game maker

Catch a fish, read the word, keep the fish

Make a magnet fishing game for reading. Each fish is a plain shape with one word on it. Slide a paper clip on every fish, tie a magnet to a string, and go fishing. A fish is kept only when its word is read out loud.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set, or choose “Type your own words” and type them.
  2. Choose how many fish. Eight fit on a page.
  3. Print on thick paper and cut out the fish.
  4. Slide a paper clip on each fish and make a rod with a stick, string and a magnet.

The reading skill

Each catch is one word to read out loud. A missed word goes back in the pond, so the hard words come up again until they are known.

Plain fish

The fish are made of an oval and a triangle, in the colors of the page. The word is the thing to look at.

A short list is fine

A list with fewer words than fish is used again, so each word swims by more than once.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

What do I need?

Paper clips, a small magnet, string and a stick or pencil. A grown-up ties on the magnet and keeps small magnets away from young children.

How big are the fish?

About three and a half inches long. Eight fit on a page.

What paper should I use?

Thick paper or card works best. Plain paper works too if you glue it to a cereal box first.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
