Tumbling tower word labels

Pull a block, read its word, put it on top

Turn a tumbling tower block game into reading practice. Print small word labels, cut them out and tape one on each wooden block. On each turn a player pulls a block, reads its word out loud, and puts the block on top.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set, or choose “Type your own words”.
  2. Choose how many labels. A full tower has 54 blocks.
  3. Print and cut the labels apart.
  4. Tape one label on each block.

The reading skill

Every turn is one word read out loud, with everyone watching the tower. Children ask to play again, and the words get read again.

The size

A label is about two and a half inches wide and three quarters of an inch tall, a little smaller than the long side of a standard block.

A short list is fine

A list with fewer words than labels is used again and again, which is good practice.
