Roll a die, move, read the word

Make a printable board game for reading practice. The squares around the page hold the words or letters you choose. Players roll a die, move, and read the square they land on. Type your own words or pick a ready set.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose words or letters. For words, pick a ready set, or choose “Type your own words” and type this week’s words.
  2. Choose how many squares the path has. Fewer squares are bigger and the game is shorter.
  3. Print. You need one die and a button or a coin for each player.
  4. Press “New version” to put the words in new places.

How to play

Each player puts a button on Start. Take turns to roll the die and move that many squares. Read the word you land on out loud. On a star, roll again. The first player to reach End wins.

The reading skill

This game is practice in reading words quickly and correctly. With letters on the squares, it is practice in letter sounds: say the sound, not the letter name.

Make it last

Print on thick paper, or slide the page into a plastic sleeve, and the board can be used again and again.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them, with a space or a new line between them.

How many words do I need?

Any number. A board with 20 squares holds about 15 words. A short list is used more than once, which is good practice.

Can I make a letter sounds game?

Yes. Choose small letters, capital letters, or type the letters your child is learning.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
