Two-piece and three-piece puzzles: letter, picture, word

Make self-checking puzzles for letter sounds and first words. Each strip is cut into two or three pieces: a letter, a picture, and the word. Every strip has its own cut line, so only the pieces that belong together fit.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose the pieces: letter and picture, picture and word, or all three.
  2. Pick the letters, or for picture and word puzzles pick a word set or choose “Type your own words”.
  3. Choose how many puzzles go on a page and the kind of cut line.
  4. Print on thick paper. Cut out the strips, then cut along the lines inside them.

The reading skill

Letter and picture puzzles practice matching a letter to the first sound of a word. Picture and word puzzles practice reading a short word and checking it against a picture.

Why every cut line is different

Zigzags have a different number of points and tabs sit at different heights. A wrong match does not fit, so a child can work alone and still be right.

Start small

Put out three or four puzzles at a time. Add more as they get easy.

Good questions

Which letters can I choose?

Every letter that has a picture in our library, and sh, ch and qu. The letter x has none yet.

Can I use my own words?

Yes, for picture and word puzzles. Choose “Type your own words”. Each word needs a picture in our library.

Why is a letter left out of the three-piece puzzles?

The word piece is for a beginner to read, so we only use pictures whose word is in our checked word sets. Some letters have no such picture yet.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
