Swat the word game maker

Hear the word, swat it, read it

Make a swat the word game. Print one mat with all the words, or big cards to spread out on the floor. A grown-up calls a word from the list. Players find it, swat it with a fly swatter or a hand, and read it out loud.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set, or choose “Type your own words” and type this week’s words.
  2. Choose one mat with all the words, or big cards with four on a page.
  3. Print. For cards, cut them apart and spread them out.
  4. Call the words from the caller list and let the swatting begin.

The reading skill

The child hears a word and has to find it among other words, which is quick word recognition. Reading it out loud after the swat checks that it was not a guess.

Plain shapes

The words sit on circles, ovals and rounded boxes. There is nothing else on the page to look at but the words.

One player or many

With one child, time the round and try to beat it. With a group, the first to swat gets the point.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Do I need a fly swatter?

No. A flat hand, a spoon or a paper tube works.

How many words fit on the mat?

Twelve on a page. More words make more pages.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?
