Fluency grid maker

A few words, again and again, against the clock

Print a fluency grid, also called a speed drill. Four to six words, or letters, are repeated in a different order on every row. Your child reads across the rows while you time it, then reads the page again on other days and tries to beat the first time.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose words or letters.
  2. Pick a ready word set, or type your own words.
  3. Choose how many different words and how many rows.
  4. Print. Time three reads and write the seconds in the boxes.

The reading skill

Reading the same few words many times, in a new order each time, moves them from sounding out to knowing at a glance. That is what frees a child to think about the story.

Keep it short and kind

One page takes under a minute. Read it once a day for three days. The only time to beat is the child’s own.

Letters too

Choose letters, and your child says the sound of each one across the rows.

Good questions

How fast should my child read it?

There is no number to reach. Look for the time coming down over three reads, with no guessing.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
