Fluency passage generator

A word count at the end of every line, and a timing box

Make a fluency page from any text. Type or paste a passage, or pick a story from our hand-checked library. The page prints it with the running word count at the end of each line and a box to write down each timed read.

Start a row with G: for a line the grown-up reads. Put a word in brackets, like [cat], to show it as a picture.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type or paste your passage, or choose “Find a ready story” and pick one by level and topic.
  2. Choose the kind of timing: words read in one minute, or the time for the whole passage.
  3. Choose how many times it will be read. Three reads on three days is common.
  4. Print one copy for the reader and one to mark.

How a timed read works

Your child reads out loud for one minute while you follow on your copy. Put a small mark after the last word read. The number at the end of the line above it, plus the words on the last line, gives the words read.

Read the same passage again

Reading one short passage on several days is the usual way to practice smooth reading. Write the date and the number in the box each time, so your child can see each read side by side.

The count is exact

The lines are measured and broken by the page itself, so the number at the end of a line is always the number of words up to that point. The title is not counted.

Good questions

How are the words counted?

Every word in the lines the child reads counts as one, including short words such as “a” and “I”. A word with a hyphen counts as one. The title is not counted.

Can I use my own passage?

Yes. Choose “Type my own passage” and type or paste it. What you type stays on your device.

Can I time the whole passage and not one minute?

Yes. Choose “Time the whole passage”. The box then has a space for the time of each read.

Which passages are in the library?

Short stories written and checked by hand for each step of learning to read, from short words such as cat up to vowel teams. Pick the reading level and type a topic to search them.
