Mini book maker: fold-up books

One sheet of paper, one cut, a little book of 8 pages

Make a little book from one sheet of paper. Pick a story from our hand-checked library, or type one line for each page. Print it, fold it on the dashed lines, make one cut, and your child has a real book to read and keep.

Put a word in brackets, like [cat], and its page shows our picture of it. Start a row with G: for a line the grown-up reads.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a story by reading level and topic, or choose “Type my own lines” and type one line for each page.
  2. Choose what goes above the words: our pictures, a box to draw in, or nothing.
  3. Print on one side of the paper, at full size. Keep the page that shows how to fold it.
  4. Fold on the dashed lines, cut on the solid line, and fold the pages into a book.

Eight pages from one sheet

The sheet has a cover, six pages inside and a back cover. Half of them are printed upside down on purpose: after the fold, every page is the right way up and in order.

A book your child can read alone

The library stories were written for one step of learning to read, and every word was checked against the letter sounds taught by that step. Pick the level your child is on.

A blank book

Choose “Type my own lines” and leave the box empty. Every page then has a drawing box and writing lines, for a book your child writes.

Good questions

How do I fold a mini book from one sheet of paper?

Fold on every dashed line and open the paper again. Fold it in half with the short edges together and cut along the solid line. Open it, fold it in half the long way, push the two ends together until the pages make a plus shape, and fold them around. A page with these steps is printed with the book.

Why are some pages upside down?

That is how a one-sheet book works. After folding, every page is the right way up.

Can I write my own book?

Yes. Type one line for each of the six pages inside, or leave the box empty for a blank book to write and draw in.

Does it print on both sides?

No. Print on one side only, at full size, so the folds land on the dashed lines.
