How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a ready chain, or choose “Type your own chain” and type the words in order.
  2. Choose a ladder to write, or the finished ladder to read.
  3. Keep the pictures on if you want a picture beside the words that have one.
  4. Print. Start at the top and go down one rung at a time.

One answer on every rung

Each rung says which letter to change and what the new letter is: “Change the first letter to p”. There is only one word it can be, so your child can check the work alone.

Why word chains help

Changing one letter makes a child look at every letter in the word and not guess from the first one. It is the same skill as reading, done slowly.

Checked chains

Every word in the ready chains is a short word in which each letter says its usual sound. The first two chains use only the letters s, a, t, p, i, n, m and d.

Good questions

What is a word ladder?

A list of words in which each word is made from the one before it by changing one letter, such as cat, hat, hot, hop.

Can I make my own word ladder?

Yes. Choose “Type your own chain” and type the words in order. The page checks that exactly one letter changes each time, and stops the ladder where that is not so.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Turn on “Answer key page”.

Which way does the ladder go?

From the top down, the way a page is read. The first word is given.
