A real little book with one sentence on each page

Make a decodable reader your child can hold. Pick a short story from our library by reading level, or type your own. Each sentence gets its own half page with a picture or a box to draw in. Print, cut the sheets in half and staple, or print on both sides and fold.

Put a word in brackets, like [cat], and its page shows our picture of it. Start a row with G: for a line the grown-up reads.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a reading level and a story, or choose “Type my own story” and type one line for each page.
  2. Choose how to bind it: cut in half and staple, or print on both sides and fold.
  3. Print at full size.
  4. Follow the steps on the last page to put the pages in order.

The reading skill

A decodable book uses only the letter sounds a child has been taught, so every word can be sounded out. One sentence on a page keeps the job small, and turning the page is its own reward.

Stories checked by hand

The library has 32 short stories in five reading levels, from short words such as cat and hen up to long vowel teams. Every word in a story fits its level.

Two ways to make the book

Cut and staple needs no two-sided printing: the pages are laid out so the two piles stack in order. Fold and staple prints on both sides and makes a book with a spine.

Good questions

What size is the book?

Half a sheet of paper. Cut and staple makes wide pages. Fold and staple makes tall pages.

Can I type my own story?

Yes. Type one line for each page, up to 14. Put a word in brackets, like [cat], to show our picture of it. What you type stays on your device.

My two-sided pages came out upside down. Why?

Choose “flip on the long edge” in the print window. Print one sheet first to check.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
