The reading skill

Every word has a vowel. A child who can pick out a, e, i, o and u, and hear the short sound in the middle of a word, is ready to read and spell short words.

The middle sound

The middle is the hardest sound to hear. Say the word slowly and stretch the vowel: caaat.

Short words with a picture

The middle sound page uses short words that have one of our pictures, so the child knows which word it is.
