Tongue twister card maker

One sound, again and again

Print tongue twister cards for letter sounds. Each card has one short sentence in which nearly every word starts with the same sound: “Six silly snails slide slowly.” A grown-up reads the card out loud. The child listens for the sound, says which sound it is, and then says the sentence, slowly and then fast.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose all the ready tongue twisters, only the sounds you type, or type your own.
  2. Choose 4 or 6 cards on a page.
  3. Print and cut on the dashed lines.
  4. Read a card out loud. Ask: which sound did you hear again and again?

The reading skill

Hearing that many words start with the same sound is called alliteration. It is one of the first steps in hearing the single sounds in words, which a child needs before sounding out.

A grown-up reads these

The sentences use words a beginner cannot read yet, such as silly and slowly. They are for listening and saying, and every card says so. The letters for the sound are underlined.

Good questions

Can a child read the cards alone?

Not at first. They are written to be read to a child. A child who reads well may enjoy trying.

Can I write my own?

Yes. Choose “Type your own tongue twisters”. Start a line with the sound and a colon, for example: s: Six silly snails slide slowly.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
