Missing letter card maker

A picture and a word with one letter missing

Print cards with a picture and its word, one letter missing. Your child says the word slowly, hears the sound that is missing, and fills the box with a letter tile, a magnetic letter or a dry-erase pen. Choose the first letter, the middle letter, the last letter, or a mix.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a ready word set, or type your own short words.
  2. Choose which letter is missing: first, middle, last or a mix.
  3. Choose 4, 6 or 8 cards on a page.
  4. Print, cut on the dashed lines and laminate if you like.

The reading skill

To find the missing letter a child has to stretch the word and listen to one place in it: the start, the middle or the end. That is the same skill used for spelling a new word.

Start with the first sound

First sounds are the easiest to hear, then last sounds. The middle sound, the vowel, is the hardest: save it for when the others are easy.

One clear answer

Only short words with one vowel are used, and only pictures a child names in one way, so each card has one answer.
