How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose clap and count, or cut and sort.
  2. Use our pictures, or type your own words with a - between the parts, such as rab-bit.
  3. Choose the longest word: two, three or four parts.
  4. Print. Say each word together and clap its parts.

The reading skill

A syllable is one beat of a word. Hearing the beats helps a child break a long word into parts that are short enough to sound out.

How to clap a word

Say the word the way you always say it and clap on each beat: rab, bit. Putting a hand under the chin works too. The chin drops once for each part.

Words that are easy to name

The pictures are ones a young child would name with that word, from one clap (cat) to four (watermelon).

Good questions

How do I type my own words?

Can I print in black and white?
