How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose a page to circle the vowel, or to write the vowel.
  2. Choose every vowel mixed, two vowels that are easy to mix up, or type your own words.
  3. Choose how many pages.
  4. Print. Say each word together and stretch the middle sound.

The reading skill

The vowel in the middle is the hardest sound to hear in a short word, and the one beginners mix up most. Picking the right vowel is the step between knowing letter sounds and reading words.

Two vowels at a time

If five vowels are too many, choose a page with two, such as a and o. The pair e and i is the hardest and is best left for last.

Words from our checked lists

Every ready word has three letters, one short vowel in the middle and a picture a young child can name.
