Word scramble maker

Mixed-up letters to put back in order

Make a word scramble for beginners. The letters of each word are mixed up, and your child writes them in the right order, one letter in each box. Add a picture clue, the first letter or a word bank to make it easier. Use our checked word sets or type your own words.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a ready word set, or type your own words.
  2. Choose the clue: a picture, the first letter, or none.
  3. Leave the word bank on for beginners.
  4. Print. The answer key is the last page.

The reading skill

To unscramble a word a child has to hold its sounds in mind and match each sound to a letter in order. It is spelling practice that feels like a puzzle.

Mixed-up letters that are safe

The mixed-up letters never spell another word from our lists, and two words made of the same letters, such as pat and tap, never land on one sheet.

Start short

Three-letter words are right for a first scramble. Move on to four and five letters when those are easy.
