Split a long word into two parts and read it

Print cards for the first long words. Each card has one two-part word, such as sunset, bathtub, rabbit or napkin. Your child finds the two parts, draws a line between them, reads each part and then reads the whole word. Or cut each word in two and build it again.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose compound words, words that split between two consonants, or type your own.
  2. Choose to mark the parts with a pencil, or to cut the word in two.
  3. Choose 6 or 8 cards on a page, and an answer key if you want one.
  4. Print. Read each part, then the whole word.

The reading skill

A long word is a few short parts. When a child can split sunset into sun and set, each part is a word that can be sounded out, and the long word stops looking hard.

Two kinds of word

Compound words are made of two small words: bath and tub. The other set splits between two consonants in the middle: rab and bit, nap and kin. Every part has one short vowel.

Your own words

Type a word with a - where it splits, for example pic-nic. The card shows the word without the mark, and the answer key shows the split.

Good questions

In a compound word, between the two small words. When two consonants stand between two vowels, split between the consonants: rab-bit, hel-met.

How do I make the cards last?

Print on thick paper, or laminate the page before you cut. Keep each set in a small bag or an envelope.

Is it free?
