Fluency homework chart maker

One passage to read every evening, with a chart

Make a fluency homework page. A short story from our library is at the top, with its number of words. Under it is a chart for three to five evenings: how long the reading took, stars to color for how it went, and a box for a grown-up’s initials. You can type your own passage too.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a story from the library, or type your own passage.
  2. Choose three, four or five evenings.
  3. Print one page for the week.
  4. Each evening your child reads it aloud. Write the time and sign.

The reading skill

Fluency is reading that is smooth and correct. It grows by reading the same short text again on several days, and the chart lets the child see the time drop.

Stories a beginner can sound out

Every library story is written with the words of one phonics level. Pick the level your child is working on.

Keep it kind

The clock is there to show progress, not to rush. Correct and smooth comes first, quick comes later.

Good questions

How do I time it?

Use the timer on a phone. Start when your child reads the first word and stop at the last.

Can I use my own text?

Yes. Choose to type your own passage, one line on each row.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
