  3. Choose how many lines to write on.
  4. Print. Talk about the pictures before your child cuts.

The reading skill

Putting events in order is the heart of retelling. A child who can say what came first, next, then and last has understood the story. The same skill is used later to retell a book.

Words on the page

The words First, Next, Then and Last, and the sentence for each picture, are for reading together: a grown-up reads them first. Then your child tells the story and writes about it on the lines.

Twelve small stories

Plant a seed, build a snowman, make a sandwich, brush your teeth, from egg to chick, a butterfly grows, a rainy day, bake a cake, wash the dog, a trip to the library, a lost tooth and fly a kite. Each has four pictures.

Good questions

Is there a page with no cutting?

Yes. Choose “Number the pictures 1 to 4”. Your child writes a number under each picture.

What does my child write?

One sentence about the story, or one for each picture on the “write what happens” page. Words spelled by sound are fine.

Where do the pictures come from?

Every picture is one of our own hand-drawn crayon pictures.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
