Fill in the blank sentence maker

One word is missing: which one fits?

Print fill in the blank pages, also called cloze sentences. Each sentence has one word missing. The missing words are in a box at the top, and the first letter of each one is printed in its gap. Your child reads the sentence, picks the word that makes sense and writes the rest of it.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick ready sentences by phonics skill, or type your own.
  2. In your own sentences, put [brackets] around the word to leave out.
  3. Print, with the answer key if you want it.
  4. Read each sentence again with the word in it.

The reading skill

To fill a gap a child must read the whole sentence and think about what it means. The first letter keeps the choice honest: the word has to fit the meaning and the spelling.

One answer for each gap

On one page no two missing words start with the same letter and have the same length, so each gap has one answer.

Sentences a beginner can read

The ready sentences are our checked decodable sentences, grouped by phonics skill.

Good questions

Which word is left out?

In the ready sentences, a word with the phonics skill of the set, not a little sight word. In your own, the word in [brackets], or else the longest word.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. It prints the full sentences.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
