How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose a reading level, or type your own directions.
  2. Choose how many pages. Each page has five directions.
  3. Print. Your child needs crayons.
  4. Check the page together: was the right thing colored in the right color?

The reading skill

A direction has to be read exactly: which thing, and which color. Getting it right shows that every word was read and understood.

Words a beginner can read

The directions use “Fill the ... with ...” and “Zig zag in the ...”, because those words can be sounded out. The pictures and colors come from our checked word lists for the level.

Silly on purpose

A pink frog or a black sun is fine. A color that cannot be guessed means the color word has to be read.

Good questions

Why “fill” and not “color”?

“Color” cannot be sounded out by a beginner. “Fill” can. Tell your child that fill means color it in.

Can I type my own directions?

Yes. Each one gets an empty box to draw in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
