Cover-up letter mat maker

Take a card, say the sound, cover the letter

Make a cover-up game for letter sounds. One page is the mat, with a box for each letter. The other page is a set of cards to cut out. Your child takes a card, says the sound of the letter, and covers the same letter on the mat with a counter.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type the letters you are working on, or choose “Pick for me”.
  2. Choose small letters or capitals on the mat, and what the cards show.
  3. Print both pages and cut the cards apart.
  4. Take a card, say the sound, cover the letter. Play until the mat is full.

The reading skill

Each card is a letter to name by its sound, and then to find among other letters. Quick, sure letter sounds are what blending words is built on.

Capital and small letters

The cards can show the other form of the letter, so a child matches a capital A on the card to a small a on the mat.

Use it again

With counters the mat can be played many times. Two children can each have a mat and race to fill it.
