Memory match game maker

Turn over two cards, read them, find the pair

Make a memory match game for words or letters. Choose the pairs: the same word twice, a word and its hand-drawn picture, or a capital letter and its small letter. Lay the cards face down, turn over two, read them, and keep the pairs.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose the kind of pair.
  2. Pick a word set or choose “Type your own words”. For letters, type the ones you want.
  3. Choose how many pairs and how many cards go on a page.
  4. Print on thick paper, cut the cards apart and play by the rules on the last page.

The reading skill

Every card that is turned over is read out loud, so in one game each word is read many times. Word and picture pairs also check that the word was understood.

Pictures a child can name

Word and picture pairs only use pictures a child would call by that word, and never two pictures in one game that look alike.

Start small

Six pairs are plenty for a first game. Add more as it gets easy.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Why are some of my words left out of word and picture pairs?

The picture card has no word on it, so it must be a picture a child can name. Open “Words that have a picture” to see what we have.

Is there a pattern on the back of the cards?

No. Print on thick paper so the words do not show through.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
