Make the letter task card maker

One letter and one way to build it on every card

Make letter task cards for morning tubs and quiet bins. Each card shows one letter with a start dot and an arrow, the picture for its sound, and one way to make it: with playdough, blocks, craft sticks, buttons, yarn, in a tray of sand, or in the air.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type the letters you want, or choose the whole alphabet.
  2. Choose one way to make the letters, or a different way on each card.
  3. Choose four, six or eight cards on a page.
  4. Print on thick paper, cut the cards apart, and put them in a tub with the things to build with.

The reading skill

Building a letter with the hands, and saying its sound while doing it, ties the shape to the sound. The start dot and arrow show where the pencil will begin later.

Words, not drawings

The thing to build with is named in words for the grown-up to read once. After that the tub itself tells the child what to use.

Use what you have

Dried beans, pebbles, bottle caps and paper clips all work as well as bought counters.
