Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose the hunt: letters, things that start with each letter sound, or words in a book.
  2. Type your own letters or words, or pick a ready set.
  3. Choose how many things are on the list.
  4. Print, hand over a clipboard and a pencil, and start hunting.

The reading skill

A letter hunt shows a child that the letters from the worksheet are the same letters on a cereal box. A word hunt in a real book is the first time many children notice a word they know on a page full of words they do not.

Three kinds of hunt

Find each letter: quick, and good for the first weeks. Find a thing that starts with each sound: the child listens for first sounds and draws what was found. Find each word in a book: the child reads the word and writes the page number.

Indoors or outdoors

It works in a kitchen, a classroom, a library or on a walk.
