Type a sentence, get lined practice to trace and copy

Create your own handwriting worksheets in a few seconds. Type any words or a sentence. Each line is shown in dotted letters to trace, with an empty line under it to copy the words alone.

To keep a copy, choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. What you type stays on your device: it is not sent to us and not saved.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type a short sentence, a few words or your spelling words.
  2. Choose the letter size. Kindergarten lines are tall; first grade lines are smaller.
  3. Choose dotted letters to trace, dashed letters, or light gray letters to write over.
  4. Print. Your child traces each line, then copies it on the empty line below.

What makes handwriting practice work

Short and often is the rule. One or two lines a day, started at the right place, do more than a long page once a week. Watch the first letter of each line: if it starts at the green dot, the rest usually follows.

Sentences a beginner can read

A child who is learning to read should be able to read what they write. Sentences made of short words work well: “I can run.” “A big red bug.” “The cat sat on a mat.”

Good questions

Is the handwriting worksheet maker free?

Yes. It is free to use and print as often as you like, at home or in class. There is no account and no limit.

Which handwriting style does it make?

Print letters in the ball and stick style taught in most American kindergartens: round letters, straight sticks, every letter started at the top. It does not make cursive yet.

Can I make handwriting practice sheets with my own sentence?

Yes. Type any sentence. Long sentences are split over several lines so each word stays whole.

How do I save my worksheet as a PDF?

Press Print and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer.

What size lines should a kindergartener use?

Tall lines with a dashed line in the middle. Choose Large or Medium here. Smaller lines are for children who already form their letters well.
