Flashlight card maker

Shine a light and the answer shows

Make flashlight cards. The front of each card shows a picture or a capital letter. The back holds the word or the small letter. Your child says the answer, then holds the card up to a flashlight or a window, and the answer shows through. Print the two pages on both sides of one sheet, or glue them back to back.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose picture cards or letter cards.
  2. Pick a word set or type your own words.
  3. Print the fronts and the backs on both sides of one sheet of thin paper.
  4. Cut the cards apart. Your child answers, then checks with a light.

The reading skill

Your child says the word for a picture, then reads the printed word to check. With letter cards, your child says the small letter that goes with the capital.

Why the backs look mixed up

The backs are in mirror order so each one lands behind its own front when the sheet is turned over. The answers can also be printed mirrored, so they read the right way when the light shines through from the back.

Paper matters

Use plain thin paper. The light does not pass through card stock.

Good questions

Do I need a printer that prints on both sides?

No. Print the two pages, cut them out and glue each back to its front.

Why is the word backward on the page?

So that it reads the right way through the paper. Turn off “Print the answers mirrored” if you would rather turn the card over.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
