Color match word card game

Match the color or match the word, and read it

Make a color match card game for reading practice. Every word comes in four colors, each with its own shape. On a turn, a player puts down a card with the same color and shape as the top card, or the same word, and reads the word out loud. Skip, other-way and pick-a-shape cards keep the game lively.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set, or choose “Type your own words” and type them.
  2. Choose how many different words. Six words make a deck of 34 cards.
  3. Print on thick paper and cut the cards apart.
  4. Play by the rules on the last page.

The reading skill

To match by word, a player has to read the top card and find the same word in their hand. Every card that is played is read out loud, so each word is read many times.

Shapes as well as colors

Each color has its own shape: circle, square, triangle and star. The game works in black and white, and for a child who mixes up colors.

No words on the special cards

Skip, other way and pick a shape are shown with plain signs, so the only words to read are the ones you chose.
