Writing checklist maker

Capital letter, spaces, end mark, makes sense

Make a writing checklist for a beginner. Each line has a small sign made of letters and a box to check: I start with a capital letter, I leave a space between words, I end with a mark. Print one poster, or two, four or six small cards for desks. You can type your own lines too.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Use our checklist with three, four or five lines, or type your own.
  2. Choose a poster or small cards.
  3. Print. Cut the cards apart on the borders.
  4. Read the list together until your child knows it by heart.

The reading skill

Reading back what was just written, and checking it line by line, is rereading with a purpose. It is the start of editing.

Read it together

A beginner cannot sound out every word on the list yet. Read it together a few times. The signs then remind the child what each line says.

Keep it short

Three lines are plenty to begin with. Add a line when the first three have become habits.

Good questions

Can I print in black and white?
